The topic of fasting has been all over the place lately. Usually in the health world it is called a "cleanse", and in church circles it is called "fasting". This topic is tough to navigate and I have limited knowledge and experience. Here are a few thoughts:
- Detoxification: Our bodies were created to do a very good job of detoxifying themselves. The liver and kidneys are especially working hard to get the toxins out. If you want some good thoughts and wisdom about how the body goes about detoxing, please read this: The Best Detox Method: You. Personally, I don't think there is a need to do any kind of detox method or plan unless medically advised. Eating nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables regularly is an excellent ongoing detox plan.
- What is your motive? If it is for health purposes, I have not been convinced by research that it has amazing long-term benefits. I understand that it might be necessary to help diagnose an issue or allergy, and that is the only time I have done it for health purposes. I was miserable. I am sure some of you disagree because of your own experiences, and that is ok. I am sure it is not bad, but I fear it encourages extreme behaviors that I have talked about in my last couple posts. If your motive is spiritual, then that is a whole other topic. Fasting can be a very good thing if your motive is correct, and here are some good motives in this fasting guide. My biggest concern is when people are fasting for spiritual reasons but are more excited about the "health" benefits of losing weight and counting calories.
- The Daily Grind: Doing what you can to avoid toxins on a daily basis is going to be key to keeping your body clean and healthy. If there are products or ways that you know you are exposed to toxins, seek to change.
Healthy lifestyle habits will make much more of a long-term difference than a 21-day cleanse. If you fast, make sure it is for the right motive.
"Create in me a clean heart, oh God, and renew a right spirit in me....Restore to me the joy of your salvation." This verse from Psalm 51 is behind my desire to have a Clean '14. See these posts:
